Cape Town Conservation & Environment

Cape Town Conservation & Environment
Cape Town’s conservation initiatives are managed by the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Environmental Resource Management Department and the Cape Town National Parks Board as well as other groups, with collective efforts to conserve the environment.

One of the most important projects in conservation efforts is the growth and preservation of water-wise indigenous plants, as water supplies decrease with heavy population growth and the spread of alien plants which absorb a lot of water.

Projects therefore include planting water-wise plant species in selected areas, and in some cases removal of alien species such as port jackson, to minimise the damage caused.

African wildlife conservation initiatives in Cape Town have included education and protection programmes to save baboon species in areas such as Hout Bay, Tokai and Kommetjie.

Baboons can be a problem in these areas as their natural habitats have changed due to increased developments over the years, which resulted in baboons entering private gardens and homes and wreaking havoc.

Tactics like baboon scarers, education initiatives and laws to prevent the killing of baboons have all helped to improve the situation.

Additional wildlife conservation efforts have included the preservation of areas on Table Mountain, which allow the native zebra and antelope to roam freely and safely, and a number of other projects.

Overall, Cape Town is fairly progressive in terms of conservation and environmental protection which preserves its stunning natural habitats, to be enjoyed for many years to come.
