Cape Town Money Matters

Cape Town Money Matters
Cape Town’s currency, like the rest of South Africa, is the Rand.

The average current exchange rate for the South African Rand is R 8.60 to US$ 1.00, R 15.00 to £1.00, R 11.70 to € 1.00 and R 6.40 to AUS$ 1.00 but with the current economic clime this can vary dramatically on an almost daily basis.

Coin denominations include 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2 and R5, while note denominations include R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200.

Foreign exchange facilities can be found at Cape Town International Airport as well as banks, hotels, backpackers and travel agents.

Credit cards such as Visa and Master Card as also widely accepted at almost all major retailers as well as most luxury South African hotels and restaurants.

The four main banks in South Africa are Absa, First National Bank, Standard Bank and Nedbank, with branches found across Cape Town.

Banking hours in the Cape are from 09h30 to 15h30 during weekdays, and 09h30 to 11h30 on Saturdays. Banks are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

ATM’s and cash-points are open 24 hours a day, and can be found in shopping centres, petrol stations, large convenience stores and many other places throughout Cape Town.

The average tipping or gratuity rate in Cape Town is 10% - 15%, however good service is often rewarded with a higher tip at the discretion of the customer. Tips are generally given at bars, restaurants, cabs and hotels.

The strong international exchange rate makes Cape Town one of the best places to visit, with hundreds of world-class stores as well as fine dining, adventure activities, bars, entertainment and much more to enjoy.
