These gardens are the oldest gardens in the country, and their origins date back to the time of Jan van Riebeeck, in 1652.

Housed in the Gardens are the South African Museum, Planetarium and the National Art Gallery.

The Gardens themselves run past the back of Parliament and Tuynhuys, the President’s official residence when he is in Cape Town, and has a beautiful tree-lined avenue, with benches and squirrels situated throughout.
Spotless grassy areas, flowers, ancient trees, a bird house and various rest points add to the beauty of the Gardens, which also hosts craft stalls and concerts at certain times of the year.

The museum offers a fascinating look into South Africa’s diverse history, and has a number of gallery rooms featuring historical eras from pre-historic dinosaur years to Khoi-San and settlement years.
There are also natural history galleries including a bird hall, wild animal hall, reptile hall and an amazing whale well with a life-size whale skeleton.

The Planetarium forms part of the museum, and offers daily shows throughout the week for guests to experience the wonders of the African solar system.
