A myriad of magical islands and lagoons with spectacular marine life make a perfect combination for an idyllic tropical getaway. A geological eccentricity nestled in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is made up of a string of islands surrounded by ancient coral reefs spread over ring-like volcanic formations.
The Maldives population is small – around 270 000 – and their origin is lost in antiquity. But history reveals that the islands have been populated for over 3 000 years and lie on the early trade routes of the Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations.
The climate of the Maldives is warm all year round but determined by the annual monsoons. However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. Of the two monsoons, the southwest monsoon from May to October brings some rain and wind. The northeast monsoon, from November to April, forms the dry season with very little wind. The temperature varies little, with an annual average daily maximum of 30˚C and an average daily minimum of 25˚C.
Warm waters, good visibility and abundant underwater life make snorkelling and diving here supremely satisfying. The Maldives also offers excellent whale- and dolphin-viewing. The Maldives is currently enjoying exciting growth, having bounced back from a number of natural disasters, and has become one of the most sought after luxury destinations in the world.
