Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi area is home to three different habitats; the river is hugged by thick riverine fringe, while a little further inland is a floodplain fringed with mopane forest interspersed with winterthorn trees. The broadleaf wooded hills that form the backdrop to the Lower Zambezi National Park constitutes the third habitat of the Lower Zambezi region.

The beauty of this region is in its state of absolute wildness. Despite the fact that the variety and amount of game is possibly not as wide as elsewhere in Zambia, there are some spectacular opportunities to get close to the game wandering in and out of the Zambezi Channels. The Lower Zambezi is in close proximity to the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the river is a massive wildlife sanctuary.

The Lower Zambezi area is home to large herds of elephant; some up to 100 strong are often seen at the river’s edge. ‘Island hopping’ buffalo and waterbuck are also common, as are lion and leopard, and you should listen out for the cry of the Fish eagle.

Safaris conducted by canoe offer visitors the opportunity for unique game viewing. At water level on a boat, the animals seem more accepting and are less likely to run off bewildered. An abundance of hippos and crocodiles inhabit the Zambezi River, which means that cooling off in the river is not advised. Fortunately a number of excellent game lodges can be found in the Lower Zambezi region, all of which undoubtedly have a swimming pool where you can cool off as the high summer temperatures rise
