The NamibRand Nature Reserve was founded in 1984 by J.A. (Albi) Brückner, and registered as a non-profit nature reserve in 1992. It is located just 60 kilometres South of Sossusvlei and forms part of the largest conservation area in Namibia.

There are four distinct habitats within the NamibRand Nature Reserve, these include rocky mountain ranges and inselberge, sweeping savannah plains, vegetated sand dunes and clay or gravel pans. The reserve is astonishingly beautiful and showcases some of the best Namibia has to offer in terms of natural scenery.

The NamibRand Nature Reserve's mission is to conserve the integrity and beauty of the land's natural ecosystems, and all true nature lovers are invited to share in and support that mission. A set proportion of park entry fees goes directly into conservation coffers.

The park is sparsely developed, and strictly off limits to tour buses and self-driving 4x4s. A few gravel roads traverse the NamibRand, but light aircraft or balloon flights offer excellent alternatives to driving as a way to appreciate the magnificence of the reserve.

The predominant large mammals on the Reserve are gemsbok or oryx and springbok. Other large mammals include kudu, Hartman's and Burchell's zebra, giraffe, klipspringer, steenbok, hartebeest and baboon. Predators include leopard, Spotted and bBown hyena, Back-backed jackal, aardwolf, Bat-eared fox, Cape fox, African wildcat, caracal and genet.  

To date 100 bird species have been identified, while work is still in progress on the inventory of rodents, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and plants.
