The Kafue National Park is similar in size to Wales, and contains over 55 different animal species. It was established in the 1920s and incorporates savannah grasslands with some thick wooded areas in places and an evergreen riparian forest that lines the banks of the Kafue River.

A dominant feature of Kafue is the Busanga Plains in the northern part of the Park. This is a vast floodplain fed by the Lufupa River system. This floodplain has been known to recede in the dry season, often trapping hippo in shallow pools.

Kafue has over 400 recorded species of bird, and an abundance of wildlife, with the only noticeable absentee being the giraffe.
