The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4 090 square kilometers, although most of the game tends to be concentrated along the valley floor. The escarpment along the northern end of the park acts as a barrier to most of the animals, keeping them within the park.

Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river's edge. Island hopping buffalo and waterbuck are also quite common. The park also hosts good populations of lion and leopard as well as excellent bird life.
