South Luangwa National Park has 60 animal species and 400 different bird species. This is one of the premier wilderness areas in Africa, famed for its seclusion and natural beauty.

South Luangwa is well-known for its large elephant herds which can number up to 70 in a herd. Buffalo and other antelope species are commonly seen throughout the park while the Luangwa River is home to a great number of hippos and crocodiles. Regrettably, there are no rhino in the Park as these were poached to extinction.

Walking safaris were pioneered in this park and remain one of the best ways to explore this African wilderness.

One important thing to note about South Luangwa National Park is the timing of your visit. Seasonal changes are very pronounced in the valley, and the rainy season can leave many of the roads impassable – although lodges do stay open for as long as possible, depending on their location in the park.
