This is the largest inland Delta system in the world. The Okavango Delta of Botswana is a meandering web of waterways that cover an area of some 15 000 square kilometres. The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that dried up more than 10 000 years ago. These days, the Okavango River has no outlet to the sea, and instead flows into the Delta, irrigating the surrounding Kalahari Desert.

Like most deserts, the Kalahari is very low on annual rainfall. But every year, the desert is irrigated by floodwaters that flow into the Delta. Not only is the vegetation lush and plentiful, but wildlife also thrives in the area, creating excellent game viewing year round.

Whether observing the Okavango Delta from a birds-eye view or from the midst of its glistening waterways and lush greenery, it is a sight to behold. Its tapestry of rivulets, estuaries, islands and winding game trails continually offers up new and exciting spectacles.

Although it is sometimes called a ‘swamp’ – the Okavango Delta is anything but. The mysterious waters move gently from a wide and winding channel into an ever expanding network of increasingly smaller passages.

These link a succession of lagoons, islands of differing sizes, open grasslands and floodplains.

It is in this oasis that you will find one of the greatest wildlife concentrations in Africa. The Okavango Delta is a magnet for wildlife who depend on the permanent waters for their survival.

Botswana's Chobe region along with the Okavango Delta, has some of the highest wildlife concentrations on the entire continent; the unique safari activities that are offered here means that you’ll have frequent opportunities to come face-to-face with Africa’s Big Five and numerous other species.
