Running along the Atlantic Ocean Coast of West Namibia, the rippled sands of the Namib Desert reach northwards into Southwest Angola.

Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for at least 55 million years, the Namib area is considered one of the oldest deserts in the world. The Namib experiences less than 10 millimetres of rain annually and is almost completely barren, except for a handful of unusual flora and local wildlife found only in this desert. One of these remarkable plant species is Welwitschia mirabilis.

In a true feat of nature, a number of extraordinary animals, insects and plants have adapted to live in this generally inhospitable desert region in unique and strangely beautiful ways.
