Greater Kruger Area

Greater Kruger Area

The Greater Kruger area covers more than 20 000 square kilometres, and is South Africa's premier game sanctuary, which, due to its sheer size remains unspoilt.
Besides the famed Big Five, a plethora of wildlife and game, endangered and not, is be found here.

The Greater Kruger area is the ideal travel destination for a luxury safari to Africa.

Private game reserves are to be found sprawled along the western boundary of the Kruger National Park in private concessions such as Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, Manyeleti and Timbavati.

These lodges cater for the discerning traveller and feature five-star luxury and ultra-luxury accommodation in suites and canvas tents.

Most come with one or a combination of private pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor shower and viewing deck. The accommodation is well-appointed and the design contemporary.Accommodation in the private game reserves is luxurious, many catering specifically and exclusively to the tastes of the discerning traveller.

The lodges include Imbali Safari Lodge (featuring spacious, luxury suites complete with imported linen); Jock Safari Lodge (opulent five-star thatched suites in two camps); Lukimbi Safari Lodge (luxury African-styled suites); Rhino Walking Safaris (luxury, stilted thatch and canvas suites); Shishangeni Private Lodge (luxury suites in three exceptional camps); Singita Lebombo Private Game Lodge (5-star suites in two stylish camps); Tinga Private Game Lodge (large luxury suites and stilted, thatched suites in two camps); and Pafuri Camp (raised, Meru-style tents).

All the lodges offer guided game drives and walks into the Kruger National Park.

Jock Safari Lodge and Singita Lebombo Private Game Lodge both feature on-site spa facilities, while Lukimbi Safari Lodge has a spa treatment room, and Imbali Safari Lodge, Tinga Private Game Lodge and Shishangeni Private Lodge all offer in-room beauty treatments.

The fences between these private reserves and others and the National Park have been removed allowing for free movement of the Big Five and other wildlife and contributing to an enhanced experience for visitors. Recently awarded private concessions within the park enable the visitor to choose between private luxury lodges inside the park or in the private reserves, or to possibly enjoy a stay at both.

The Kruger National Park was opened in 1898 at the instigation of then-president Paul Kruger. After hunters had considerably decimated the originally rich game stock, the entire area between the Sabie and the Crocodile Rivers was put under the protection of Nature Conservation to ensure the survival of the remaining wildlife. Only as recently as 1961 was the extended Kruger Park fenced in.

The park itself stretches from the Crocodile River in the south up to the Limpopo River, which is the international border in the north. Altogether it is 350 kilometres long, 65 kilometres wide and comprises an area of roughly 20 000 square kilometers, more if the surrounding concessions are taken into account.

A web of roads of 1 863 kilometres leads through the National Park, 697 kilometres of them being tarred. For the visitor there are numerous differently equipped rest-camps, the majority of them scenically positioned. Within the park boundaries, travel is only allowed between sunrise and sunset.

The best time for observing the animals is in the dry winter season when the grass is low and bushes and trees are devoid of foliage, leaving little to obstruct the view.  Because of the very low rainfall in winter, the wildlife come to the watering holes to drink and can easily be viewed in the mornings and evenings.

Malaria is prevalent in the Greater Kruger area all year round, but particularly in the warmer, wetter summer months from September to April. Travellers are advised to use insect repellent after dark, and to take a course of prophylactic tablets, which are readily available throughout the country.

All varied forms of indigenous life, both fauna and flora, that inhabit the Greater Kruger Park area - mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, trees, shrubs and grasses, insects and micro-organisms - cohabit to create a wonderfully coherent yet exceptionally delicate balance, in which the cycle of life is sustained by collective dependence.
